Extension (traction, spinal decompression)
Extension is painless, modern, non-invasive treatment of disc diseases of the cervical and lumbar spine. Represents stretching of the spinal column through the application of mechanical force to relieve pain in the waist and legs, as well as pain in the neck and arms.
During this procedure, by cycling through decompression and relaxation phases and by proper positioning of the patient, a spinal disc can be isolated and placed under negative pressure, causing a vacuum effect within it. The vacuum effect accomplishes two things. From a mechanical standpoint, disc material that has protruded or herniated outside the normal confines of the disc can be pulled back within the disc. Also, the vacuum within the disc stimulates in growth of blood supply, secondarily stimulating a healing response. This results in pain reduction and proper healing at the injured site.
The extension achieves reduction of pain, reduction of muscle tension, the small joints between the vertebrae are relieved, the pressure on the discs is reduced, the flexibility and mobility of the spine is increased.
Spinal decompression is carried out on a special traction bed, the patient is fixed with belts, the computerised device pulls the spinal column with a force of a precisely determined strength. The treatment starts with a small traction force, which gradually increases. Physical agents for relaxation and analgesic action can be used as an introduction to tractio.
In most cases, the use of spinal decompression can avoid surgical treatment of the spine.
